Discover the Charm of "Shōkin"
The Beauty of Wabi Reflected in the Ceiling
"A Checkered Ceiling of Reeds and Silk Weaving"
The ceiling of "Shōkin" is one of the room’s most striking design features.
Crafted by alternating reeds and delicate silk fabric in varying heights, the ceiling forms a refined checkered pattern known as an ichimatsu ceiling.
This elegant composition expresses the quiet sophistication of the "wabi" aesthetic.
The intricate fabric work was created by Seikodo Nakajima, a renowned Kyoto atelier closely connected with Daitoku-ji Temple and the Senke tea schools.
It is a beautiful expression of sukiya architecture carried all the way to the ceiling itself.
The Aesthetic of Concealing a Television
Within the Traditional Style Study Room "Shoin"
The shoin(Study Room)shoji screens beside the tatami room are more than decorative elements.
These four sliding panels are designed so that, when moved to one side, a television quietly appears from within.
The TV stand is seamlessly integrated into the built-in storage beneath the shoin, allowing modern functionality to blend naturally into the space without disturbing the room’s traditional beauty and atmosphere.
Preserving the Scenery While Softening the Sound
The Playful Elegance of an "Invisible Shitajimado Window"
Traditionally, a shitajimado window would be placed along the hallway side of the tatami room.
In this room, however, the opening was intentionally closed to improve sound insulation and privacy.
Yet rather than erasing its presence completely, subtle design details remain.
Decorative kōzama-style openings and recessed rectangular framing create the illusion of a hidden window, adding depth, shadow, and quiet visual intrigue.
It is a subtle expression of playful sophistication, where functionality and design exist in perfect harmony.
Great Attention to Detail Hidden
Within Small "Fusuma" Doors
Beside the tatami alcove are two small sliding "fusuma" doors for the built-in "chijibukuro" cabinet.
Rather than ordinary karakami paper, these doors are finished with exceptionally refined materials.
Luxurious combinations of pure silk fabric featuring floral-and-bird tatewaku patterns and antique kosarasa textiles create a richly layered expression of traditional beauty.
The handles are elegant "vintage shippo round pulls," adding a dignified presence to the design.
Even the most subtle details are infused with the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship.

Every carefully considered detail brings depth, elegance, and quiet sophistication to the entire room.
